On October 25, 2002, a plane crash tragically killed U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila, daughter Marcia, and three campaign staff members just days before Election Day. Wellstone, a tireless advocate for social and economic justice, served Minnesota for twelve years and forged deep connections with the Iron Range community. A six-acre memorial site honors his enduring legacy, featuring the Legacy Trail, Commemorative Circle, and Crash Site Narrative Space. Local artists contributed to its design, which was built on donated land with the support of the Wellstone Action Fund and countless generous donors. The site stands as a testament to Wellstone’s values and impact, inviting reflection and inspiration for future generations.
